The Ipiranga district received its name from the Ipiranga stream, which cuts through the area. Ipiranga is a Tupi-Guarani indigenous word, meaning “Red River” which is due to the muddy waters of the creek.
Ipiranga is a historical area, it was here were Emperor Dom Peter I proclaimed Brazilian independence from Portugal in 1822 on the banks of the Ipiranga stream.
