Ipiranga Neighborhood (Independence Proclamation Site). In Ipiranga, you will find the Sao Paulo Aquarium, Sao Paulo Zoo, the Botanical Gardens, the State Park, Independence Park, Paulista Museum and many other sites located close-by. The Ipiranga district received its name from the Ipiranga stream, which cuts through the area. Ipiranga is a Tupi-Guarani indigenous word, meaning “Red River” which is due to the muddy waters of the creek. Ipiranga is a historical area, it was here were Emperor Dom Peter I proclaimed Brazilian independence from Portugal in 1822 on the banks of the Ipiranga stream.
